Germán A. González Herrera was born in Bogotá, Colombia. He is a Colombian attorney who graduated from the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana, one of the top universities in the country. He also holds a law degree from the University of the Basque Country and earned a Master’s Degree in Fundamental Rights from Carlos III University of Madrid.

Germán came to the United States to visit his girlfriend, whom he met online while completing his master’s degree. After several visits, they decided to get married during his last trip. He left everything behind and started a new life in the United States. For several years, he worked alongside many other immigrants—an experience that gave him a deep understanding of the challenges and needs of the immigrant community. He quickly realized the importance of having an attorney who speaks Spanish as a first language.

When he was finally able to begin studying for his third law degree—this time in the U.S.—he poured all his energy and passion into his studies. Upon graduating from the LL.M. program at Washington University in St. Louis, he was selected to deliver the commencement speech for his class. While studying for the bar exam, he volunteered for a year, and after passing the bar, he worked nearly a year with a nonprofit organization focused on immigration law.

In 2019, he opened his private practice: Gonzalez Herrera Law Firm, LLC, through which he has served hundreds of immigrant families across the country. Germán is licensed to practice law in both Colombia and Missouri, USA.

In addition to his legal practice, Germán is an adjunct professor and academic advisor at Washington University in St. Louis School of Law, where he mentors LL.M. students. German is deeply involved in advocacy work, serving on the boards of the Hispanic Bar Association of St. Louis, the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, the Hispanic Leaders Group and American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA)’s Kansas-Missouri Chapter. His commitment to community service has been recognized with a Proclamation from St. Louis City County, the Chairman Champion Award from the Hispanic Leaders Group, and the “Man of the Year” award from Crisis Nursery. Germán also created a mentorship program for Hispanic law students and has provided over $80,000 in pro bono legal services to families in need.

Today, Germán continues to combine his passion for social justice with his legal career, using his experience and empathy to empower the immigrant community and advocate for a fairer and more humane legal system.

Germán llegó a Estados Unidos para visitar a su novia, a quien conoció por internet mientras cursaba su maestría. Después de varias visitas, decidieron casarse durante su último viaje. Dejó todo atrás y comenzó una nueva vida en este país. Durante varios años trabajó junto a muchos otros inmigrantes—una experiencia que le dio un profundo entendimiento de sus desafíos y de la importancia de contar con un abogado que hable español.

Cuando finalmente pudo comenzar sus estudios en derecho en Estados Unidos, puso toda su energía y pasión en su formación. Al graduarse del programa LL.M. de la Universidad de Washington en St. Louis, fue elegido para dar el discurso de graduación de su clase. Mientras se preparaba para el examen de abogacía, fue voluntario durante un año y, una vez aprobado el examen, trabajó casi un año con una organización sin fines de lucro dedicada al derecho migratorio.

En 2019, fundó su firma, Gonzalez Herrera Law Firm, LLC, desde la cual ha representado a cientos de familias inmigrantes en todo el país. Germán tiene licencia para ejercer el derecho tanto en Colombia como en Missouri, Estados Unidos.

Además de dirigir su firma, Germán es profesor adjunto y asesor académico en la Escuela de Derecho de la Universidad de Washington, donde guía a estudiantes internacionales del programa LL.M. También está profundamente involucrado en el trabajo comunitario, formando parte de las juntas directivas de la Hispanic Bar Association of St. Louis, la Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, el Hispanic Leaders Group of Greater St. Louis y el capítulo Kansas-Missouri de la American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA).

Su compromiso con la comunidad ha sido reconocido con una Proclamación del Condado de la Ciudad de St. Louis, el premio Chairman Champion otorgado por el Hispanic Leaders Group, y el reconocimiento como “Hombre del Año” por Crisis Nursery. También creó un programa de mentoría para estudiantes de derecho hispanos y ha ofrecido más de $80,000 en servicios legales pro bono a familias inmigrantes necesitadas.

Hoy en día, Germán continúa combinando su pasión por la justicia social con su carrera legal, usando su experiencia y empatía para luchar por un sistema migratorio más humano y empoderar a las comunidades a las que representa.
